13 reasons why you should travel Australia

After living and travelling in Australia for 7 months, I have developed such a strong love for this country and it’s people, I have never felt for another place before.
It really makes a difference spending a long time in another country and living with locals versus visiting a country for a short time.
You get so much more emerged into the culture and get to know the locals instead of only getting to know other travellers.
These are my 13 reasons why you should choose to travel Australia and possibly spend multiple months in this country.

1. open and friendly people

In Australia, so many strangers came up to me and talked to me, even if it was just a short conversation about recommendations of what to see in the area.
Everyone is open for a chat and so friendly.
They casually call everyone “mate”, “darling” or “sweetie” and it makes it seem like they are all friends and I think that is so wonderful.
They offer you rides and like to show you their area.
Everyone just seemed to always be happy, and I love their laid back lifestyle.
They just take everything as it comes and don’t rush themselves.
These people really made it easier for me to talk to strangers and open up.
I had a hard time back in Germany just going to supermarket workers and asking for a product, and in Australia I just asked about every little thing to be sure I am right.
I went into every bus stopping where I waited and asked about the bus I need to take even though I knew it will come in 2 minutes, but just to be sure.
This is the perfect place to learn to become more social and open.
I just love Aussies!

2. diverse nature

Their nature really stretches from beaches to mountains, from rainforests to deserts.
Literally any kind of travelling is possible there, which means there is something for everyone to like.
If you like spending time at the beach you are in the right place, if you like hiking, there are good tracks you can take.
Most of them aren’t too hard, but extremely beautiful.
There are also cities to explore if you like that better, or you can mix everything and have the best time ever there.

3. diverse climate

Australia has to offer lots of different climates.
If it is the tropical, hot and humid climate you like, you can find it in the north.
If it is the cooler, maybe rainy weather you like, you will find it in the south and if you like snow, you can even find that in some places in the south in winter.
There is something for everyone and in between you will find many sunny days literally everywhere.
So no one can tell me they think it is going to be too hot for them.
You just have to find the right place to travel to and the right season, and everyone will find what they desire.

4. safe for solo travelling

Australia is great for solo travelling because it is really safe.
There will be good accommodation nearly everywhere, and there is good transport to many places.
As there are many other solo travellers, you might find people you can travel with as well.
I always felt really safe in Australia and never felt like I might be in danger or could get things stolen.
Of course that is possible everywhere, so always take care of yourself and your belongings, but you will always get help by Australians if you need it.

5. high wages

Australia is especially attractive for people doing a working holiday because wages are so high.
Their minimum wage is at 21,38 AUD per hour as of July 1st 2022.
That is the highest minimum wage in the world.
Many people come to Australia to work and earn good money for further travels or to bring back home.
I also feel like there are many job opportunities there in hospitality, sales and also mining which is really popular.
These are the jobs that many travellers are doing.

6. intresting wildlife

Many people might say they don’t want to go to Australia because of the dangerous wildlife, but you will probably not encounter any poisonous animal during your stay.
I haven’t seen any dangerous snakes, and the spiders I have seen were in nature and minded their own business.
As of sharks, crocodiles or dangerous jellyfish, you should take care of what local authorities tell you about them and swim and surf where there are others.
But don’t let that be the reason not to visit Australia.
You will encounter even better animals more often like kangaroos, kookaburras, other interesting birds and maybe koalas.
Their wildlife is so diverse and different to every other country.
It is definitely worth travelling there to see all of that.

7. Great Barrier Reef

It is not only the Great Barrier Reef that is really impressive, but all the other coral reefs and the marine life around Australia.
It is so beautiful and just like another world for another species.
I saw turtles, small reef sharks, impressive corals and fish both in the Great Barrier Reef, but also in another reef on the west cost.
You can also see dolphins and whales if you’re lucky and in the right season.
There are also tours to discover the marine life and I think that is beautiful.

8. surfing and surf towns

Australia is perfect for everyone who likes to surf or who might want to learn how to surf, but even if it is not for you, there are such beautiful surf towns.
I love Byron Bay which is a popular town to go surfing in, especially for travellers, but surf towns always have such good vibes.
Everyone is walking around in their swimmers (bathing suits) and are barefoot (as Aussies are all the time anyway).
Often there are small, unique shops in surf towns and beautiful beaches of course.

9. sunsets and starry sky

I have never seen as impressive sunsets as on the west coast of Australia.
They are immaculate and draw beautiful colours on the sky as the sun sets on the horizon.
It will also look different every day, so you will never get tired of looking at the sunset.
I also feel like it is possible to see so many more stars in the sky in Australia.
Even laying on the beach near a city, I saw more stars than from my backyard at home.
I also always saw one to five shooting stars while stargazing, which I never did at home so easily.
The sky is just so beautiful in Australia if it is day or night.

South beach Fremantle

10. great for road trips

This is the perfect country to do road trips in, as you can see the most of the country like that.
There are beautiful routes to take by car or with a van, like the great ocean road, and you can camp wherever you want.
You will find camping spots (that might be without any sanitary facilities, though) in the middle of nowhere on the coast in Western Australia.
Aussies love their camping and are usually equipped for extreme camping on the beach or in lonely places.
If you don’t have a car to drive along some routes, there are possibilities for buses going along the coast, or you could join other travellers, which is always great fun and a unique experience.

12. very international

There are so many travellers from all over the world in Australia and that is perfect to not only get to know Austrians, but also people from different countries.
You can learn about their culture too and make friends all around the world just travelling through Australia.
Aussies are also already used to all the internationals and are always interested in hearing stories and learning about your culture.
It is just beautiful to be surrounded by so many different people that come from different places and can tell you different stories about their home and life.

11. people have a unique style

I love the Australian style!
You will find girls walking around in their bikinis all the time and boys in their shorts and unique flannels in warm areas.
There are people wearing cowboy accessories and many tradies (construction workers) walking around in their work uniform, and I think that is so cool.
People are so laid back, and you can definitely tell that in their style.
The guys having mullets, and loving it, even though many people might not find it pretty, and so many of them having a moustache as well.
You might not like that when you first see it, but to be honest it grew on me, and now I love moustaches and don’t mind a good mullet, which I would have never thought before coming to Australia.

13. their accent

Even tough it was hard to understand their accent in the beginning, I love it now.
I got used to all their words like swimmers, tradies, thongs, their habits of saying cheers and mate all the time and using hey as a question.
I love how they pronounce things like water (“woda”) or how are you going (“how ya goin”) which they just use as a way of greeting someone.

All these things made me love this country so much, and I definitely want to go back some day to see more of the country and maybe live and work there for a longer time.
In Australia, you will always feel welcome and that makes it easy to feel at home there.
You don’t believe me?
Try it for yourself and travel there for a while and emerge into their culture, and you will love it.

I was in Australia for 7 months myself and loved it so much, so thought I’d gather some points why others should go as well. I can definitely recommend it to anyone
