Places I have visited in Western Australia

My last month of my travels in Australia I have spent in Western Australia.
It is a stunning state with the most beautiful sunsets I have ever seen and desert that lasts for miles and miles.
It has nature I have never seen before and the people living in the places far off of civilization are really inspiring, as they enjoy living far from everything, surrounded by nature so much.

On my journey, I spent a couple of days in Perth and did road trips with some other people down the coast and up the coast.
I have definitely not seen all the places you should see on the West coast of Australia, so don’t use this as a travel itinerary.
Rather use this as inspiration for some nice places to visit in WA.

Perth

Of course, you must visit the capital of WA.
Perth has gorgeous places, such as Kings Park, Scarborough beach and Elizabeth Quay.
My favourite thing was definitely Scarborough sunset markets that are going on in summer.
Even though I was there at the last summer sunset market of the year, the vibes were so great, but I imagine them to be immaculate when it is really warm in the evening.

Fremantle

I know that Fremantle is a part of Perth, but it is one of my favourite places in Perth.
There is the prison where you can do tours, there are Fremantle markets on the weekend and there is south beach.
That beach definitely turned into my favourite place to watch the sunset from.
There are many people around having picnics on a big grass area, and it is perfect to watch the sunset.
Fremantle markets sell food from all over the world and other random items.
I love the old charm of Fremantle city.
Many buildings are pretty old, as well as the prison, which is worth a tour.

Rottnest Island

This is the place to be if you want to see Quokkas and pretty bays.
There are ferries going to the island from Fremantle and Perth, and it is worth it booking a bike to do a biking tour around the island.
There are so many pretty beaches and bays to see around the island.
You will also definitely spot Quokkas.
They are really trusting in areas where people are gathering, such as the camping areas and the small town.
You shouldn’t feed or touch them though, but try getting a selfie with them and don’t forget to smile together.

Busselton Jetty

Busselton jetty is a 2 km long jetty with an underwater observatory at the end.
You can either walk the way there and back or book the small train shuttle that goes along the jetty.
In the underwater observatory you can see corals on the wooden rods that are holding the platform and fish that lives around there.

Sugarloaf Rock

It is just a lookout to see a rock, but it is such a pretty and peaceful place to watch the sunset from.
There are not as many people as on south beach in Fremantle, and you can climb over some rocks to find a nice place to sit at.
You could also bring some food and drinks to have dinner there while watching the sunset.

Margaret River

The town itself is pretty, but not too exciting.
There is a really good bakery you have to check out though which is called “Margaret River Bakery”.
The pretty places there are found at the beach.
I only visited surfers point, but you were able to chill in some natural pools there or go for a swim in the river nearby.
It was also possible to rent kayaks there to use on the river.
At some other places there are good snorkelling spots.

Yanchep National park

Going north from Perth now, there is Yanchep National park with a koala walk and some other bush walks.
The koala walk is just through an enclosure where the koalas live and is only fairly short, but fun to try to spot koalas.
I can recommend going in the late afternoon, when all the kangaroos come out of the bush on a big grass area.
We watched around 25 kangaroos for a while, which was really cute for someone that doesn’t see kangaroos every day.

Pinnacle desert

The pinnacle desert is definitely worth a visit.
It is a national park, and you can drive through the desert by car and stop in between to take pictures if you have a 4 wheels drive.
The desert is pretty big with lots of pinnacles, and we even saw emus in there.

Hutt lagoon

Sadly, we just drove by Hutt lagoon and didn’t drive to the lookout, but the lake is actually a bit pinkish, which is why it is also called a pink lake.
I imagine it looking really good on pictures from up close, though.

Shell beach

Shell Beach is in shark bay and is a beach full of little shells.
Great to take pictures.
The water there is extra salty, so you will float on the surface if you go for a swim.
There are more beautiful places in shark bay, that you need to check out, that I sadly didn’t get to do.

Pebble beach

This beach is differently to shell beach, full of pebbles that are more colourful than usual pebbles, as they are from corals.
It is not a known beach, so it is pretty quiet, and you can drive on the beach with your car.
I think I actually preferred this beach over shell beach because I was fascinated by all the colourful little pebbles.

Charles Knife Canyon

This Canyon has some little trails, some of which are just through the short bush plants to a deep valley, which is pretty impressive though.
The outlook on the ocean is wonderful as well.

Cape Range National Park

Cape Range National Park has many pretty beaches to go snorkelling at.
I went snorkelling in turquoise bay and saw two white tip reef sharks and four turtles and heaps of fish and corals.
You can also go snorkelling at oyster stacks, but they forbid going in the water at a certain time due to the tide revealing corals that could get snapped off by swimmers.
I loved turquoise bay, though.
If you were being careful and with someone else, you could go in at one spot and let the current take you along the Ningaloo reef, but you have to get to the shore again at the right time.
Otherwise, you will be swept out to sea.

turquoise bay

I did my road trip up to Exmouth when there was the solar eclipse in 2023.
We watched it at turquoise bay and it was fascinating.
Due to that it was really full in the north and not the normal conditions and due to the Easter weekend, the area around Margaret River was pretty full as well when I went.
I was still able to see the beauty of Western Australia and can recommend everyone to visit.
It is a crazy feeling, driving for hours through the desert and basically living right in nature.
